The International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare (ICCAW) is affiliated with China Association for the Promotion of International Agricultural Cooperation (CAPIAC). It is a non-profit organization approved by Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People’s Republic of China and registered at the Ministry of Civil Affairs in June 2013. As a leading farm animal welfare organization in China, ICCAW is dedicated to promoting animal welfare concepts, implementing animal welfare-friendly farming systems and improving the quality and safety of livestock products.

ICCAW plays a strong role in industry standard development concerning animal welfare. The Expert Committee of ICCAW developed the first series of animal welfare standards in China – Farm Animal Welfare Requirements: Pig, Farm Animal Welfare Requirements: Cattle, Farm Animal Welfare Requirements: Sheep, Farm Animal Welfare Requirements: Broiler and Farm Animal Welfare Requirements: Laying Hen. All these standards were promulgated by China Association for Standards, and laid the foundation for product labeling and animal welfare assessment and would promote related legislation in China. In April 2016, ICCAW was registered in the ISO animal welfare working group and would participate in the drafting of Animal Welfare Management – General Requirements and Guidance for Organizations in the Food Supply Chain as D-Liaison.

ICCAW promotes international cooperation actively. With World Animal Protection, ICCAW jointly launched China Public Survey on Animal Welfare in January 2014. Besides, in partnership with Compassion in World Farming (CIWF), the Good Pig Production Award had been launched in China. In 2014, thirteen companies won the Award. The event was rated as one of the top ten news about animal welfare by Global Meat News in 2014. In 2017, CIWF and ICCAW launched Good Egg Award and Good Chicken Award in China. In total, 25 companies won the China Awards and nearly a million farm animals benefited.

ICCAW also holds conferences, forums and training programs on animal welfare, as well as promoting public interest in farm animal welfare by educational and other methods. In 2013, 2014 and 2015, China Animal Welfare Forum on Quality and Safety of Meat and Poultry Products was held by ICCAW. In 2016, Poultry Welfare Conference and Swine Welfare Conference were held respectively. In total, more than 2000 people attended the events and more than 50,000 people were reached through media. In October 2017, World Conference on Farm Animal Welfare, jointly hosted by FAO and CAPIC, was organized by ICCAW. The conference gained worldwide recognition. ICCAW also cooperates with University of Edinburgh and carries out a farm animal welfare training program. In April 2018, the first symposium on swine welfare was held.

ICCAW is membership-based and open to companies worldwide. At present, ICCAW is working with nearly 1000 companies in China - retailers, producers and manufacturers, in an effort to improve farm animal welfare in the livestock sector. Our partners include state-owned companies and large enterprises with great influence in China, such as Da Bei Nong Group, Shunxin Group, Chuying Group, Guangdong Wens Group, etc. Besides, ICCAW has established an Expert Committee which includes 170 senior experts in the fields of animal husbandry and veterinary sciences. They are from over 50 organizations such as Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, China Agricultural University, Nanjing Agricultural University, Northeast Agricultural University, China Animal Disease Control Center, etc.
