Session on Animal Welfare and Antimicrobial Reduction i.e. HealthyLivestock Project Kickoff Conference

      On October 24-25th 2018, the Second World Conference on Farm Animal Welfare, jointly hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and China Association for the Promotion of International Agricultural Cooperation, takes place in Beijing. In the morning of October 25th, the Session on Animal Welfare and Antimicrobial Reduction, i.e. HealthyLivestock Project Kickoff Conference, is held. The Session is jointly hosted by Institute of Quality Standards & Testing Technology for Agro-Products of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare and Wageningen University & Research.
 
 
      Gong Xifeng, Director of the International Cooperation Bureau of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, chairs the session. Gudrun Gallhoff, Minister Counsellor for Health and Food Safety in the Delegation of the European Union to China, Dong Keqin, Director of European Affairs Unit of International Cooperation Branch of the Ministry of Science and Technology deliver the welcome speeches. Dong Keqin says that HealthyLivestock project is a key international cooperative project of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. The project kickoff indicates that the agricultural technological cooperation with the European Union has entered into a new stage.
 
 
      Hans Spoolder, Senior Scientist of Wageningen Research and EU Account Manager and Ayoshi, President of the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare make a project introduction. The main objective of HealthyLivestock is to reduce the use of antimicrobials applied by the pig and broiler industry in China and Europe, and the subsequent residues in the food chain and the environment, by improving on-farm animal health & welfare without compromising productivity. Wageningen University & Research is the European Coordinator. Institute of Quality Standards & Testing Technology for Agro-Products of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare coordinate the Chinese part of the project. Leading universities, livestock research institutes and major livestock companies in Europe and China work together to tackle antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and join forces for better health and welfare of pigs and poultry. The project participating organisations including Newcastle University, French National Institute for Agricultural Research, French Pork and Pig Institute, Italian Research Centre for Animal Production, German Federal Research Institute for Animal Health, Poland National Veterinary Research Institute, Nanjing Agricultural University, Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group Co., Ltd., Research Center for Rural Economy, etc.
 
     
      Bas Kemp, Professor in Adaptation Physiology of Wageningen University, Jörg Hartung, Professor for Animal Hygiene and Husbandry and Professor for Animal Welfare Science of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover and Yang Shuming, Director of Agro-product Quality and Safety Research Unit of Institute of Quality Standards & Testing Technology for Agro-Products of CAAS make engaging speeches and share ideas and solutions in animal welfare-friendly farming.

 

In the afternoon of October 25th and in October 26th, more than 60 project participates from Europe and China hold in-depth discussions on project implementation and management details.
