The First China Welfare Standards for Farm Animals

The first China Welfare Standards for Farm Animals were audited and approved by experts in the last few days. China Welfare Standards for Pigs, as the first released standards within the serial China Welfare Standards for Farm Animals,were jointly drafted by the International Cooperation Committee of Animal Welfare (ICCAW) and China Quality Mark Certification Group (CQM) and were published with the approval of China Association for Standardization (CDMB).

The standards were formulated on the basis of existing science and technology condition as well as social and economic status in China. Referring to and absorbing advanced notion of farm animal welfare, the China Welfare Standards for Farm Animals have filled in the gap in this field of China. The standards were applicable to farm rearing pigs and would provide the whole scheme for the rearing, handling, transport, slaughter of pigs.

During the establishing process of the standards, the specialists and scholars from all around the country as well as business representatives from outstanding livestock breeding enterprises fully discussed the content of the standards and scientifically elaborated each aspects of pig breeding, including food and water, environment, management, health, transport, slaughter, handling, recording ad tracing. The standards also adopted opinions and suggestions from various enterprises in livestock breading industry to guarantee the practical operability.

The introduction of the China Welfare Standards for Farm Animals has great significance for accelerating the healthy development of China livestock breeding industry and improving the quality of animal derived food product.
